Wheelersburg Shoots the Senators Out of the 1-3-1.

WHEELERSBURG - Portsmouth West (7-4, 2-2 SOC III) attacked the Pirates early but the 1-3-1 could not stop the 3-point shooting by Wheelersburg (7-1, 4-0 SOC III. The Pirates defeat the Senators in the much-anticipated rivalry.

On Friday night Portsmouth West visited the Wheelersburg Pirates for an SOC III matchup. The Senators' won the tip and Braxton Kammer found Will Kegley for the first points of the ball game. Wheelersburg turned the ball over due to the tight 1-3-1 Senator's Defense which led to another Will Kegley bucket. After Wheelersburg got on the scoreboard, both teams began trading points to wrap up the first quarter.


In the second quarter, Wheelersburg stretched the Senators' defense out which led to a three-pointer from Hunter Bivens and a two-point field goal by Jack Doerr. As the second quarter was nearing the end, Braylon Rucker drove baseline and then kicked it out for a Xavier Miller trifecta. Wheelersburg led at the break 26 to 17 as Portsmouth West's Will Kegley led all scorers with 15 points.

To begin the second half, the Senator's extended their iconic 1-3-1 defense beyond half-court which led to Pirate turnovers. Despite cutting into the lead, Wheelersburg continued to shoot the ball at a high percentage from beyond the arc.


As the game started to slip away, Wheelersburg stretched the floor and bled the clock. This led to the Senator's reverting to fouling to extend the game. Xavier Miller became clutch at the end of the game as he would go perfect from the foul line. Wheelersburg would go on to win the game 52-45 over Portsmouth West to remain undefeated in the SOC III.


Wheelersburg's Hunter Bivens poured in 20 points as Xavier Miller scored 13. Portsmouth West's Will Kegley led all scorers with 22 points.


The Pirates now sets their sights Miami Valley Christian Academy (Cincinnati, Ohio) while the Senators prepare to take on the Ironton Fighting Tigers.
